What did Lenape Indians eat?
They ate pumpkin, blueberries, squash, beans, corn, peppers, deer, tomatoes and cattail root. Lenape also had a knowledge how to make soups, puddings and bread. The soups were usually very dense and they were made from beans. They also drank tea which was made from white cedar and sumac. With which tools did Delaware Indians cook? The Delaware Indians cooked dishes in pots made from clay. Then they wrapped food in the leaves and left it on hot ashes. How did Lenape grow plants and food? The Lenape tools for planting were made from shells, bones, wood, clay and stone. First they cleared trees from forest with a tomahawk. When the forest was cleared, they created a planting area there in order to plan beans, corn, squash and tobacco. Mainly they planted corn. It was planted points that were 6 feet away from each other in every direction. How did Delaware indians live? Delaware Indians often located their villages near tributaries but also sometimes near big rivers. It was easier to protect in banks than in a flat terrain near river. The Lenape created the village by building a meeting hall in the middle of the village and then houses around it. How did their houses look like? The Lenape houses were called wigwams. Usually every family had got their own house. They were in the shape of an orange cut in two halfs. They did not have got windows but there was a hole in the roof for smoke. How did Lenape travel?
The Delaware Indians did not use a normal canoe to travel. They had their own type of canoe made from hollowed logs that were impossible to navigate and portage. The Lenape also made their own stone roads which were 16 inch wide. Later, they were used as basics for modern highways in America. One of these roads is King's highway which is the main road between New York and Philadelphia. What was Delaware's Indians medicine? The Lenape called their doctors herbalists. Herbalists had a wide knowledge about medicine and they used it for magical purposes. They were described as healers that can heal people by using natural plants. Herbalists usually were woman but occasionally a man could be chosen after he proved that he has the ability of healing visions. They learnt medicine from elders but also the knowledge was sent to them by god called creator. Which plants were used for healing? Only plants like roots and barks that were clean and developed could be used in medicine. Lenape also believed that barks that grew on east side of the tree was best because of the morning sun that gave them strength and power. What are Lenape colours? The colors of the Delaware Indians were black, red and white with a Lenape mask in the middle. "The mask on the Lenni Lenape flag is divided vertically into black and red halves. The mask, represents Mesingw, the "Masked Spirit" of traditional Lenape legend . Mesingw is the guardian of the creatures of the forest. These creatures were of vital importance to all eastern tribes, they were the main source of food, much as the buffalo served the nations of the Plains. In front of the mask of Mesingw appears a peace pipe and fire starter. The peace pipe is a widely used symbol on many Indian tribal flags.To the north is a Christian cross, representing the history of the Christian faith within the people.To the east is a turkey claw, symbol of the Unalactigo; one of the three main divisions of the Delaware nation.To the south is a turtle for the Unami division and to the west lies a wolf paw print for the Wolf clan." How did Lenape Indians relate to British colonies? The first European people on Delaware territories were Dutch.
